"I work in colour sometimes, but I guess the images I most connect to, historically speaking, are in black and white. I see more in black and white - I like the abstraction of it."

Mary Ellen Mark

"I believe the essence of photography is black and white. Colour is but a deviance."

Ruth Bernhard

Black and white are the colours of photography. To me, they symbolise the alternatives of hoped despair to which mankind is forever subjected."

Robert Frank

Adam is keen to use the power of black and white photography to evoke thought and consideration of viewpoints and mindsets, and the need to challenge convention, history and direction.

He likes to portray difference and how fortunate and blessed people we are to have difference at all levels of our world – from within our local communities to a more a global level. By showing difference, be it in interests, ways of life or doing, stronger cultural influences, or in direction, an opportunity is created for a little more engagement and harmony in the world. There is so much beauty in difference, and the challenge for him is how to show this in his work.

He is also committed to making images which show the beauty of the natural environment – but also the impact humanity has on it. Increasingly it is also possible to show the damage and impacts on individuals and communities, which while predictable, often seem to be surprising.

He is also fascinated by the urban and rural built environment and in particular large scale industrial buildings with limited contemporary use. While the building styles and shapes were often unique and fit-for-purpose, they often represent a point in time – now long past. There is something about these constructed “landmarks” and their decay which point us to where we have been and our willingness to brush so many things from our past aside.
